A local school district is investigating an incident on a school bus that sent a 7-year-old to the hospital.

Parents of children on the Highlands School District bus said the girl was violently attacked and they are concerned.

Melissa Davis said her son and his classmates left the bus in tears.

“It was very shocking because the kids were so upset,” Davis said. “He said, ‘the girl didn’t do anything. The girl that did the injuring turned around, grabbed the girl by the neck and started banging her head on the window.’”

Joseph Latess, who is Highlands School District's Superintendent, said the bus has clear surveillance footage and the incident is not as bad as many parents believe.

“That’s not what the video revealed,” Latess said. “There was an injury, regrettably. We don’t want students pushing students or bullying other students. But, the parents seem to think the student is in trouble all the time. It’s an isolated incident on the bus and it was dealt with appropriately.”

Latess and several staff members said the girl was pushed and hit her head.

Latess said he is working with the school’s principal to add a teacher’s aide to the bus.
